About Me - Susan Naimark

A Lifetime’s Work

Educator. Activist. Organizer. Networker. Lover of nature and justice.

My racial equity training and consulting practice has its roots in my life experiences growing up, and as a parent in the Boston Public Schools. Growing up in a religious Jewish household within a predominantly Christian community, I was always aware of being an “other.” When I became a mom, I witnessed my white sons prosper in schools that deadened life prospects for their peers of color. This led me into racial justice activism and organizing. My understanding of the advantages afforded by my whiteness lives within these contexts.

My work integrates my learnings from two decades in leadership roles in nonprofit community development with my ever-emerging understanding of my role as a white person in challenging racial injustice. I work as an affiliate trainer with Interaction Institute for Social Change, and as part-time faculty at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, School of Education – along with my own independent consulting with nonprofit organizations and public agencies.

For two decades I served as co-chair of the board of directors of Community Change Inc., a Boston nonprofit that has educated and organized for racial equity since 1968. More recently, my volunteer work has been with SURJ (Showing Up for Racial Justice), a national organization founded in 2009 as a political home for white people engaged in racial justice work.

What I’ve come to understand is that this journey of uprooting racism will not end in my lifetime. We are working to change beliefs, behaviors and systems that have been embedded in our collective identity since the founding of this country. My work is driven by the belief that creating a new culture based on respect for all is possible and necessary.

When I’m not working, I find my peace in nature. I decompress by walking the beach, hiking the woods, messing around with plants. I recharge by spending time with family, cooking and sharing meals with friends, quilting, creating art from found and recycled objects. Remaining curious and positive.
